brett prince
My name is Brett Prince and I am currently a student at the Sheridan College Institute of Technology in my final year, majoring in E-Commerce Management.
Throughout my life I have always been an avid fan of technology. I love the way it works, how it touches lives, how it has the potential to grow and become something different entirely. It wasn’t until the past 5 or so years that my interests really peaked in the world of Web, and my desire to learn more was fuelled a company by the name of Google.
Google wasn’t even a “thing” 10 years ago.
Google has exploded. The company is in a constant state of motion and creation, and they seem to understand the importance of progression and making information and technology relevant. Google is smart, they’re organized, and this is also the essence behind Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization. It involves thought, attention, input, and strategy – it’s competitive.
In 2007 the total spending on Internet Marketing was 20 billion. Due to a high return on investment, it’s estimated it will grow to over 60 billion in 2012. Internet Marketing really has revolutionized the way we handle business online, from selling to purchasing, advertising, and communicating with customers.
Innovation is exciting.
Search engine optimization/Search Engine Marketing
Keyword research
I am able to refine keywords based on industry to find the best keywords to target. The keyword research process is broken down into 4 major steps:
Organic searches: How many total searches are there per day? How much of the total search traffic can the site expect to achieve? What has been the search trend as far as monthly traffic goes?
Adwords: How many clicks is a #1 Google advertiser expected to receive from their ad based on this keyword? What is the percentage of people who click those ads? What is the expected cost to implement the ad?
Competition: How many web pages (globally) contain this keyword? How many contain this specific phrase in their title? Finding out the ratio between the two will give you an idea of how competitive this keyword is. How many advertisers have ads with this keyword? How many are bidding for it?
Commerciality: Are these people that are searching more likely to buy a product or not? What is the value of traffic coming from Adwords? What is the keyword value based on potential #1 Google placement traffic?
SEO Competition
There are a variety of factors that one needs to keep in mind when looking at SEO competition. I will go over them here, as they’re all important when it comes to ranking in search engines:
Off Page: How old is your domain? What is your Page Rank? How many Page Backlinks do you have? How many Domain Backlinks? How many .edu/.gov backlinks? Is your site listed in the DMOZ Directory? Is it listed in the Yahoo! Directory?
On Page: Is your targeted keyword in your website title? Is it in the URL? Is it in the description? Is it in the header tag? Is it in the content? When is the last time Google cached your site?
promotion - Backlinks
I understand the importance of backlinks on a variety of websites to enhance SEO and drive traffic to a website.
I am familiar with posting on .gov/.edu sites, Web 2.0 sites, blogs, forums, and article websites. I analyze these websites prior to posting a backlink to ensure that the sites allow do-follow links and to make sure that they are high PR prior to posting, as doing so maximizes potential with very little time wasted.
The social media advantage
myspace.com - "an explorer" 2008 - Present
My personal music account on Myspace has received over 923,000 views with over 948,000 song plays, along with 19,000 friends. This was accomplished exclusively online through digital media partnerships and online promotion over a 2 year span. Below are a couple promotional examples:
Youtube.com - "The "Humans" project2008
Through my personal music project "An Explorer", I have contributed to a very successful YouTube campaign titled “The “Humans” Project”. We cross promoted with YouTube and Myspace, resulting in over 608,000 views and 2700 five star ratings since 2008.
motorcyclecrashes.net2009 - Present
I began MotorcycleCrashes.net with the idea of creating an online media network with entertainment in mind, providing new, vibrant content for users across multiple websites. I began by searching keywords within the motorcycle industry (an interest) and selected a primary keyword based on reletively little competition, but a still a keyword that could generate enough traffic if I decided to monetize the site.
Next, I purchased a domain and developed the site based on Wordpress, purchasing a Wordpress template, which I then customized myself using XHTML, CSS, and PHP.
All videos are hosted via YouTube and embedded on the MotorcycleCrashes.net site. This is great for a few reasons: 1) I get referrals and generate relevant searches and traffic from Youtube, 2) It keeps bandwidth costs low as far as video streaming goes, and 3) Relevant websites link to and embed my YouTube videos, therefore promoting my brand and my site in the process. Great for SEO.
All videos contain a watermark that says "MotorcycleCrashes.net" for branding and promotion. Each video contains a refined keyword list very similar to the MotorcycleCrashes.net to maintain targeted traffic, to increase search engine visibility, and to keep visitor loyalty high.
MotorcycleCrashes.net's videos are uploaded to a variety of video websites apart from YouTube, such as DailyMotion.com, video.yahoo.com, vids.myspace.com, Metacafe.com, Blip.tv, Break.com, eBaumsWorld.com, StupidVideos.com, i2tv.tv, and Streetfire.net. The total combined plays to date for these sites is 75,000+, which primarily results in direct traffic back to MotorcycleCrashes.net. However, through Google Analytics I've seen referrals from the video sites that allow a URL in the video description.
MotorcycleCrashes.net has received 4,478 unique visitors and 14,000+ page views in just over one month.
There is a total of 17 YouTube hosted videos with a combined play total of 97,000+, developed during the same time frame. The current play count exceeds 155,000 for YouTube alone.
MotorcycleCrashes.net's targeted keyword is reaching 3616 exact searches daily, with over 166,000 different webpages containing the keyword. MotorcycleCrashes.net has a Google PR rank of 4, is the #3 website on Google.ca for the specific keyword and is the #2 website on Google.com – and gaining ground.
twitter.com - Brettprince2009 - Present
This Twitter account is primarily for Internet marketing and promotional purposes only. It currently has 31,000+ followers targeted by keywords, giving the site a relevant audience. I post various things, from information to news, and talk to Internet Marketing hobbists in an effort to build relationships. I also cross promote via a Facebook fan page to initiate word of mouth.
facebook.com - Motorcyclecrashes.net2009 - Present
This Facebook account is an extension of MotorcycleCrashes.net and is used primarily to push the search engine indexing of new posts on the MotorcycleCrashes.net website. It could potentially be developed into a communication medium for and between fans.
